Winter Is Here….Is Your Home Ready?

We all know winter on Long Island isn’t always gentle. Between the snow, sleet, ice, and the occasional nor’easter, your home takes a beating every season. As a local realtor, I’ve seen how winter weather can cause unexpected damage and even lower property value if left unchecked.
Most people know the basics: check the heat, seal windows, stock up on salt. But here are a few less obvious tips that can make a big difference this winter:
Protect Outdoor Faucets…:Even the “Frost-Free” Ones
Think those frost-free spigots are foolproof? Not always. If a hose is left attached or if water isn’t fully drained, those pipes can still burst in a deep freeze. Shut off the water to exterior lines from inside and let them drain completely.
Inspect Roof Valleys & Flat Areas
Heavy snow collects fast in low-slope sections of your roof or where two rooflines meet. If melting snow can’t drain, you’re risking leaks and ice dams. Consider using a roof rake after major storms or having these areas cleared professionally.
Test Your Sump Pump in Advance
When the ground thaws after a deep freeze or a snowstorm turns to rain, sump pumps are your unsung heroes. Test yours with a few buckets of water to make sure it kicks on and drains properly.
Keep Your Attic Cold
It sounds backward, but it’s true: a warm attic leads to uneven roof temperatures, which causes snow to melt and refreeze into damaging ice dams. Make sure your attic is properly ventilated and insulated to stay cold.
Mark Your Property Lines and Sprinklers
Plow drivers, snowblowers, and even you might forget exactly where your lawn meets your driveway. Marking sprinkler heads, curbs, or even delicate bushes with tall flags can save you hundreds in spring repairs.
Use Silicone Spray on Doors & Locks
If you’ve ever had a car or shed door freeze shut, you’ll love this one. A little silicone spray on weather stripping and lock mechanisms can keep things moving….even in sub-zero wind chills.
Check Trees Near the House
After heavy snow or ice, tree limbs that hang over your house or driveway become dangerous. Schedule a quick trim before storms arrive or keep an eye out after one passes.
Winter doesn’t have to catch you (or your house) off guard. If you’re thinking about selling this year, the steps you take now to maintain your home will pay off later; in both safety and value. And if you need a referral to a great contractor, roofer, or landscaper to help prep, just reach out.
