Why the First 5 Minutes Matter
When it comes to selling your home, you might think buyers are looking at the kitchen layout, the square footage, or whether there’s enough storage space. And they are. But what actually sells a home happens in the first five minutes.
That first impression…how the house looks, smells, feels, often determines whether a buyer will even consider putting in an offer.
In those first moments, buyers are asking themselves:
“Can I see myself living here?”
“Does this feel like home?”
“Is this property well cared for?”
Once their mind is made up, it’s hard to change.
What Buyers Notice Instantly
Here’s what I help my clients focus on when we’re prepping for showings or open houses:
Curb appeal: The lawn, the walkway, the front door. It’s the handshake of the home.
Smell: Neutral and fresh is best. Strong fragrances (good or bad) can be a red flag.
Lighting: Is it bright and welcoming? Natural light goes a long way.
Clutter: Too many personal items, family photos, or toys can make it hard for buyers to imagine their own life in the space.
Flow: How easy is it to walk through? Are rooms inviting or cramped?
