LONG ISLAND REAL ESTATE BRIEF

It’s time we talk about something that hits home for so many families: where will our loved ones live as they age, and how do we make sure they don’t have to leave the communities they’ve called home for decades?
Long Island has one of the fastest-growing senior populations in the state, but the options for affordable, accessible housing are lagging behind. For too many families, the only choice is moving their parents away from them - or out of state entirely.
This is not just the numbers. It’s about what it means to age with dignity, to stay close to family, and to feel supported by your community. Seniors need homes that are smaller, safer, close to healthcare, and walkable to shops and essentials. And they need them now.
Developer Rob DiNoto, who has worked across Long Island, put it plainly:
“We’re seeing more and more seniors who want to stay on Long Island, but the options just aren’t keeping up. I’m committed to building smart, thoughtful communities that actually meet those needs…places where people can downsize without leaving the neighborhoods they love. For me, this isn’t just about putting up buildings, but about keeping families close and preserving a sense of connection and independence.
I’ve developed 55+ communities, transit-oriented housing, and storage solutions because I believe in building for the future, and that means creating space for our seniors to stay connected, independent, and part of Long Island’s story.”
Rob’s not alone. The truth is, the need for senior housing isn’t on the horizon…it’s right here, right now.
As a real estate professional, I see families every day trying to find options for their aging parents. It’s one of the most emotional and difficult parts of the home-buying journey, and it’s one that deserves real solutions. It’s time to prioritize accessible, affordable, community-based senior housing across Suffolk and Nassau.
We can’t view this like it’s just a trend but moreover - a responsibility.
Let’s keep our seniors home - on Long Island, where they belong.
